Chapter 6
Episode 6telefonas =43292.
Stop calling.hero
The phone rings at 3:47 a.m., a sound like a trapped bird beating against the glass of the nightstand. I don’t move. I’ve learned to let it sing its desperate song until it tires itself out. The caller ID reads only a string of numbers—43292—and I know that sequence by heart now, the way I know the cracks in the ceiling tiles above my bed, the way I know the exact pitch of the monitor’s beep when it syncs with my own pulse.
The room is white, but not the clean white of surrender. It’s the white of a page that’s been erased too many times, the ghost of every word that was ever written and then scrubbed away. My oxygen mask hisses softly, a serpent’s lullaby, and I let it fill my lungs with the taste of plastic and medicine and something almost like peace.
The phone stops. Then it starts again. *43292. 43292. 43292.* Like a heartbeat that refuses to accept the body’s verdict.
