The nurse's name was Reda, and she carried the morning medications like a weapon she was tired of wielding. Her hands were steady, but her eyes told a different story—they flickered to the window, to the locked door, to the small crucifix above my bed that I had not noticed until now.
"Treasure," she said, setting down the paper cup of pills. "That's what my grandmother called the burden. Lobis on one shoulder, nasta on the other. You carry both into every room you enter."
I swallowed the pills without water. They scraped going down. Reda nodded once, as if I had passed some test, and then she was gone, leaving behind the smell of antiseptic and the echo of a word I could not shake.
