Whispers in the Walls

Faint scratching sounds begin to accompany the knocks, adding to the growing dread. Laura insists she hears faint whispering, but Amy can't confirm.

The silence that descended after the second knock was a heavier thing than the absence of sound. It pressed in on Amy, Connor, and Laura, a tangible weight in the suddenly too-large living room. The ticking of the grandfather clock in the hall, a comforting presence just hours before, now sounded like a relentless countdown. Laura, curled into a ball on the floral sofa, her eyes wide and fixed on the front door, let out a tiny whimper.

“It’s gone, isn’t it?” Connor whispered, his voice not quite as steady as he’d intended. He’d been the one to call out, his bravado a thin shield against the unease that had begun to prickle at the edges of his courage. He’d expected a gruff voice, a frustrated delivery driver, anything but the unnerving silence that followed.

Amy, ever the observer, scanned the room. The shadows cast by the late afternoon sun were lengthening, stretching like grasping fingers across the worn carpet. She saw nothing out of the ordinary, yet the air felt thick with an unseen presence. She shook her head, a small, almost imperceptible movement. “I don’t know. But Grandma said…”
