The silence that settled after the second knock was a different kind of quiet. It wasn’t the peaceful hush of a house settling for the night, nor the comfortable lull of a shared breath. This was a taut, expectant silence, heavy with the unspoken question: *What now?* Amy, perched on the edge of the worn armchair, felt a prickle crawl up her spine, a sensation that had nothing to do with the cool evening air seeping through the old windowpanes. The grandfather clock in the hall, usually a comforting presence with its steady tick-tock, now seemed to mock the stillness, its rhythm a relentless countdown to something unknown.

Connor, ever the restless spirit, paced the length of the living room, his sneakers squeaking faintly on the wooden floor. He stopped at the window, peering out into the deepening twilight. “Nothing,” he muttered, his voice a low rumble. “Just trees. And shadows.” He turned, his gaze sweeping across the room, landing on Laura, who was huddled on the sofa, her knees pulled to her chest, her wide eyes fixed on the front door.

“It’s just the wind, Connor,” Laura whispered, her voice thin and reedy. But even as she spoke, a shiver traced its way down her arms. The wind, when it blew through the ancient oaks surrounding the house, usually sang a mournful song, but tonight, it sounded like a sigh, a weary exhalation that carried a hint of something else, something… watchful.
