Chapter 5
The Second Knock
Later, a second knock sounds, louder this time. The triplets huddle together, wondering if the unseen visitor is trying to gauge their aloneness.
The silence that followed the first, tentative rap against the ancient oak door was a heavy, suffocating blanket. Amy, Connor, and Laura, huddled together in the dim hallway, felt the air thicken with an unspoken dread. The grandmother’s words, once a peculiar, almost whimsical instruction, now echoed with a chilling gravity. *“If you ever hear one knock, don’t open it. Amy, however, had seen the faint, almost imperceptible smudge of something dark on the wood, just where the knock had landed. It hadn’t looked like mud. It had looked… different. “It wasn’t the wind, Connor,” she’d said softly, her voice barely a whisper. “And it wasn’t a branch. It was a knock.”
