The heavy oak door creaked open, admitting the scent of damp earth and the faint, familiar aroma of lavender that always clung to her grandmother. Amy, Connor, and Laura scrambled to their feet, a surge of relief washing over them so potent it almost made their knees buckle. They had spent the last hour huddled together in Grandpa Bob’s room, the echoing silence outside punctuated only by the frantic thumping of their own hearts, a silence that had been far more terrifying than the knocks themselves.

Their grandmother stood framed in the doorway, her face etched with a weariness that seemed deeper than mere travel. Her eyes, usually sparkling with gentle amusement, were shadowed, and a single silver streak had appeared in her dark hair, a stark contrast to the way it had been only a few weeks ago. She looked at them, her gaze sweeping over their pale faces, the tear tracks on Laura’s cheeks, the way Connor’s bravado had dissolved into a nervous fidgeting. A soft sigh escaped her lips.

“You’re safe,” she murmured, her voice raspy. She stepped inside, closing the door with a decisive click that seemed to seal away the lingering unease. “Thank goodness.”
