The Grandmother's Return

The silence that followed the triple knock was more unnerving than the sound itself. It pressed in on them, thick and heavy, a suffocating blanket woven from fear and anticipation. Amy, Connor, and Laura huddled together in the hallway, their eyes wide and fixed on the front door. The wood seemed to pulse with an unseen energy, a silent testament to the unseen entity just beyond its surface. Connor, ever the impulsive one, had taken a tentative step forward, his hand hovering near the doorknob, but Amy’s sharp hiss had frozen him in place. Laura, meanwhile, was trembling, her small hands clasped so tightly her knuckles were white. The lingering echo of the third knock, a desperate, insistent rap that had felt like a physical blow, still resonated in the marrow of their bones.

They waited. Seconds stretched into an eternity. The grandfather clock in the hall chimed the hour, its sonorous tones a stark contrast to the frantic thumping of their hearts. Each tick of the clock seemed to measure out their dwindling courage. Amy’s mind raced, piecing together fragments of her grandmother’s warning, trying to make sense of the impossible. *If you ever hear one knock don't open it the thing is trying to see if your home. Second knock it's trying to know if your alone.* But what about the third? What did the third knock signify? It had been so much louder, so much more urgent than the others. It had felt like a demand, a desperate plea, or perhaps, a threat.

Connor shifted his weight, his gaze darting between his sisters and the door. "She’s been gone ages," he muttered, his voice a low growl that betrayed his own mounting anxiety. "What if something *did* happen? What if she’s not coming back?"
