Chapter 15
Inside Grandpa Bob's Sanctuary
They enter the room, finding it filled with old books and maps. A strange, calming aura emanates from the space, offering a temporary respite.
The attic door, once a daunting barrier, now felt like a gateway. Amy, her heart thrumming a frantic rhythm against her ribs, pushed it open further. A narrow beam of moonlight, slicing through a grimy windowpane, illuminated a space that was less dusty storage and more forgotten archive. It was Grandpa Bob’s sanctuary, a place her grandmother had always spoken of with a hushed reverence, a room now designated as their last resort.
The air inside was thick with the scent of aged paper, leather, and something else, something faintly spicy and comforting, like old pipe tobacco. Unlike the rest of the house, which bore the gentle patina of time and use, Grandpa Bob’s room felt preserved, a snapshot of a life lived with purpose and perhaps, a secret knowledge. Shelves lined the walls, groaning under the weight of books, their spines a kaleidoscope of faded colors and cryptic titles. Maps, brittle with age, were tacked haphazardly to the walls, some depicting familiar coastlines, others swirling with fantastical continents and uncharted territories.
Connor, ever the pragmatist when faced with a new environment, immediately began a systematic scan. His eyes, usually bright with mischief, were wide with a cautious curiosity. He ran a hand over a globe perched on a heavy oak desk, its surface worn smooth in places from countless turns. “Wow,” he breathed, his voice a low rumble. “Grandpa was a serious explorer, or something.”
