The silence that descended after the third knock was a living thing, thick and suffocating. It pressed in on Amy, Connor, and Laura, a tangible weight that made their breathing shallow. The house, which had moments before felt like a cozy, if peculiar, sanctuary, now seemed to hold its breath, listening. Laura’s small hands were clasped so tightly her knuckles were white, her wide eyes darting between her siblings. Connor, usually so quick to puff out his chest and declare bravado, stood rigid, his gaze fixed on the front door as if daring whatever was out there to try again. Amy, however, felt a different kind of tension coiling in her stomach. It was the familiar knot of unease that preceded a storm, a premonition that this was far from over.

Second knock… it's trying to know if you're alone. And if anything happens… go to Grandpa Bob's room, okay sweethearts?"

One knock. Two knocks. Three knocks. Each had been a calculated step, a probing finger reaching into their lives. The first, a hesitant rap that could have been a misplaced delivery. The second, a more insistent demand, almost impatient. And the third, a thunderous boom that had rattled the very floorboards beneath their feet. What would the fourth knock bring? Amy shivered, pulling her cardigan tighter around herself, though the air was not cold.
