Chapter 13
The Locked Door
They reach Grandpa Bob's room, but the door is locked. Panic sets in as the knocking outside grows more aggressive, shaking the door.
The hurried scramble down the hallway was a symphony of desperate breaths and thudding footsteps. Laura, her face a mask of pure terror, clung to Connor’s arm, her small frame trembling like a leaf caught in a gale. Amy, though her own heart hammered a frantic rhythm against her ribs, kept her eyes fixed ahead, her mind racing through possibilities, each one more chilling than the last. The wood of the hallway floorboards seemed to vibrate with the insistent, malevolent rhythm of the knocking, a sound that had transformed from a mere nuisance into a palpable threat. It wasn't just a sound anymore; it was a presence, pressing against the very fabric of the old house, a dark, probing force determined to breach their sanctuary.
"Almost there!" Connor gasped, his voice strained. He pushed open the heavy oak door that led to the study, his usual bravado now laced with a raw urgency. The room was dim, filled with the musty scent of aged paper and forgotten leather. Dust motes danced in the slivers of light that pierced the gloom from the single, tall window. But their attention wasn't on the room's contents. It was on the door at the far end, the one their grandmother had pointed to, the one that promised safety. Grandpa Bob’s room.
Amy reached it first, her fingers fumbling for the doorknob. It was cold, unyielding. She twisted, pushed, pulled – nothing. The door remained stubbornly shut, a solid barrier between them and their supposed refuge. A choked sob escaped Laura’s lips, a small sound that echoed the rising tide of panic within them.
