Chapter 12
Grandma's Safe Room
Remembering their grandmother's instruction, Amy directs them towards Grandpa Bob's room, hoping it holds the safety she promised.
The third knock had been a brutal, insistent thud against the old oak door, a sound that vibrated not just through the wood but through the very marrow of the triplets’ bones. It had been a sound of impatience, of a growing frustration that curdled the air in the hallway. Laura, her face pale and her eyes wide pools of terror, had already retreated, her small frame trembling as she pressed herself against Amy’s side. Connor, for all his bluster, had a rigid set to his jaw, his knuckles white where he gripped the worn rug. The silence that followed the third knock was a heavy, suffocating blanket, far worse than any noise. It was the silence of waiting, of anticipation, of something holding its breath.
Amy, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs, felt a cold dread seep into her. Her grandmother’s words, so clear and precise just hours ago, now echoed in her mind like a desperate mantra. *“If you ever hear one knock… don’t open it… Second knock… trying to know if you’re alone… and if anything happens, go to Grandpa Bob’s room, okay sweethearts?”*
The third knock had been an escalation. It wasn’t just checking if they were home, or if they were alone. It felt like… a demand. A challenge.
