The Third Knock

A third, more insistent knock reverberates through the house. It's accompanied by a low, guttural sound that chills them to the bone.

The silence that followed the second knock was a taut, vibrating thing, stretched thin like old parchment. Amy, ever the observer, watched Connor’s knuckles whiten as he gripped the edge of the armchair. Laura, a small, trembling bird, was pressed against her side, her breath coming in shallow puffs against Amy’s arm. The air in the living room, once thick with the scent of old wood and lavender, now felt cold, charged with an unseen current. Each tick of the grandfather clock in the hall seemed to punctuate their rising fear, a slow, deliberate countdown to something they couldn't name.

It had been a long, agonizing wait since the second knock. The grandmother’s words, so clear and precise when spoken in the bright afternoon light, now echoed in the deepening dusk with a chilling resonance. *“Second knock it’s trying to know if your alone.”* They weren’t alone. They had each other. But the *thing* outside, whatever it was, hadn't seemed to care. It had moved on, leaving behind only the lingering echo of its presence and the gnawing certainty that this was far from over.

Connor shifted, his gaze fixed on the heavy oak front door. "It's gone," he muttered, his voice a little too loud, a little too forced. "It's definitely gone."
