Laura's Nightmare

Laura’s small hand, clammy and trembling, found its way to Amy’s arm. Even in the dim light filtering through the lace curtains, Amy could see the wide, frightened eyes staring at nothing, or perhaps, at something only Laura could perceive. The house, usually a comforting symphony of creaks and groans that spoke of age and warmth, had fallen into an unnerving silence. It was a silence that pressed in, thick with unspoken anxieties, a silence that felt far more menacing than any sound.

“Laura?” Amy’s voice was a low whisper, a fragile thread in the vast expanse of quiet. “What is it? You’re shaking.”

Laura didn’t answer, her gaze fixed on the hallway that led to the front door. A faint whimper escaped her lips, a sound so small it was almost swallowed by the stillness. Connor, usually the first to break any tension with a joke or a restless movement, sat unusually still on the worn rug, his gaze flicking between his sisters. He’d been unusually subdued since the second knock, his bravado seeming to deflate with each passing hour.
