Viespatie. Emanueli. The doors did not click shut; they groaned like the axis of a planet turning inside its own socket. I was standing in the corridor of my grandmother’s house, but the walls were no longer plaster and wood—they were membranes of green light, pulsing with the same slow breath as the aurora over a frozen Canadian lake. There was no earth body here. I was a ghost wearing the memory of skin, a whisper of bone.
“Saugok nuo raganų,” a voice said, not in my ear but deep inside my ribs, between each heartbeat. “From the witches of the yellow candle, from the rabbi whose prophets burned until they were nothing but cinders.” And I saw them: figures in long coats, their faces erased by the same green light, stumbling through a field where rusted swords grew like weeds. They had tried to prove the number—the 666, the lie they called the only truth. But there is no vote for them. No threshold that opens. They reach the door of Greece, and NKVD shadows swallow them in Riga, in a remnant that rots like old gas seeping from a sealed well.
I walked forward. The floor beneath my feet was a map of old wars, continents drawn in dried blood and ink. A sword lay at my feet, rusted, the blade etched with the word elshaddai. I bent and picked it up. It crumbled to dust that smelled of honey and blood, of something holy and something devoured. “Mutation,” I whispered. “Gene of the cannibal.” The world had grown teeth inside its own belly. Humanity called for wisdom, but wisdom was a stone on a holy cliff, and the stone was dry, and no one could drink from it.
