Chapter 4
Chapter 4: The Compass and the Letter
Klarina returns from the lighthouse and contacts Jonas, who reveals that the metal piece came from a ship's compass he gave to Elena. He shares a letter Elena left for Klarina, explaining the difficult choice she made to pursue her art. Klarina finds understanding and forgiveness, and a new clue from the postcard leads her to a final destination.
The walk back to the guesthouse felt lighter than the journey out. Klarina kept her hand on the locket, its warmth a constant reassurance. She felt closer to her mother than she had in years.
Darius was sweeping the front steps when she arrived. He looked up and smiled, a knowing look in his eyes. “You found it,” he said. It was not a question.
“I did,” Klarina replied, pulling out the locket. “There was an inscription in the lighthouse. ‘Elena’s light. 2004.’ She painted that scene from the top of the tower.”
