Chapter 4

Chapter Four — The One Who Crossed

Lira leaves the White Blue Legion and comes to Klisto, who receives her as promised. The Legion issues a final ultimatum declaring Klisto's movement a threat to order. The Monkey Without Face attacks Lira with intensified doubt during her transition. Klisto teaches his followers about the nature of the invisible battle and reveals that the moth of revolution is half-spent. The chapter ends with Klisto sensing a larger convergence approaching as the Gradient World Jesus Christe's presence grows stronger.

Morning arrived the way it always did in the borderlands between the pink world and the territories the Legion claimed as its own — slowly, grudgingly, the light seeping across the horizon like something ashamed of what it might illuminate. Klisto stood outside the ruin where he slept and watched the sky perform its reluctant brightening, the note still folded in his coat pocket, its three words pressing against his chest with a weight that had nothing to do with paper.

He had expected this. Not the specifics — not the handwriting, not the timing, not the particular ache of knowing that someone had crossed the threshold of their own volition and was now standing on the other side of a door that only opened from within. But the shape of it, yes. The inevitability of someone coming. He had told his followers as much, and he had told them with the plain certainty of someone describing weather that had not yet arrived but whose pressure systems were already readable in the joints and bones of anyone paying attention.

The gradient light moved through him differently today. Slower. More deliberate. As though it were conserving itself for something, gathering its resources the way a body gathers breath before submersion. He could feel the presence of the Gradient World Jesus Christe somewhere behind the visible architecture of the world, not close enough to touch but close enough to sense, the way you sense a fire in the next room by the change in air temperature alone. That presence had been building for days. Klisto did not name it to his followers. Some things spoke louder for being left unspoken.
