Chapter 4

Chapter 4: The Red Line and the Living Silence

Klisto and Lina return to observe the District 6 reeducation facility over multiple days, mapping patrol patterns and discovering a rhythmic cycle ('ciklas') in the Legion's operations. Klisto becomes aware of a 'red line'—a boundary that is alive, not static—marking the threshold between the silenced world and the breathing resistance beneath it. He encounters signs that the Monkey Without Face's erasure is incomplete, that silence itself carries living signal. The chapter deepens the push-pull dynamic between Klisto and Lina as their shared mission tightens around them, and ends with Klisto resolving to cross the red line—not recklessly, but with the patience of a stitch drawn through fabric.

The red line was not painted on the ground.

Klisto learned this on the third morning of observation, when Lina led him along the perimeter of the District 6 facility and he finally understood what she meant when she said the boundary moved. It was not a wall. It was not a fence or a chalk mark or a line of Legion officers standing shoulder to shoulder. The red line was a frequency—a hum below hearing, a vibration in the soles of the feet when you stepped too close to the place where the Legion's control thickened into something absolute. Cross it and the cameras adjusted. Cross it and the air changed temperature by half a degree, a shift so subtle that the body registered it before the mind could name it. Cross it and you were inside, not geographically but jurisdictionally, subject to the systems that turned remembering into a diagnosable condition.

"Ciklas," Lina murmured. She used the Lithuanian word the way Egle might have used a stitch pattern—as shorthand for something structural, cyclical, dependable in its repetition. The cycle. The loop. The predictable return.
