Chapter 9
The Hidden City
Following the oracle's guidance, they discover a hidden city beneath the mountains, populated by descendants of an ancient magical order. They learn more about the Whispering Crown's power.
The ascent had been brutal, a relentless clawing at the sky, each breath a searing reminder of the thin, frigid air. Arin’s muscles screamed in protest, his lungs burning with every ragged inhale. Beside him, Zophia, though visibly weary, pressed on with a quiet determination that never failed to steady his own faltering resolve. The oracle’s words, a cryptic map etched onto their minds, had led them here, to the jagged peaks that pierced the clouds like broken teeth. “Beneath the heart of the stone,” she had whispered, her eyes like chips of ancient ice, “lies what you seek.”
For days, they had followed the winding game trails, the whispers of the wind their only companions, until the path dissolved into sheer rock face. It was Zophia, with her uncanny knack for uncovering the obscure, who had found it – a fissure, barely wide enough for a single person, concealed behind a curtain of frozen waterfall. Now, they descended, the world of sun and sky receding, replaced by an echoing darkness that swallowed their torchlight. The air grew heavy, thick with the scent of damp earth and something else… something ancient and potent, like ozone after a lightning strike.
The passage twisted and turned, a labyrinth carved by forces unknown. Arin kept his sword drawn, his senses on high alert. Every drip of water, every scuttling sound from the unseen depths, prickled his nerves. Zophia, however, moved with a scholar’s curiosity, her eyes scanning the rough-hewn walls, occasionally pausing to trace symbols that appeared to be etched into the rock. “These markings,” she murmured, her voice hushed with awe, “they are unlike any script I’ve encountered. Older than Eldorian, older even than the Sunstone Empire.”
