Chapter 13
The Secret Stash Under the Bed
Rufus remembered counting coins in his bedroom. He looked under his grand bed and found a huge pile! He'd been so excited, he'd just shoveled them under there.
King Rufus, with a sigh that was more puff than gust, trudged back to his chambers. His royal slippers, usually so silent on the plush carpets, now seemed to squeak with every dejected step. The morning had been a whirlwind of frantic searching and even more frantic orders. Sir Reginald, with his monocle practically vibrating with earnestness, had organized a kingdom-wide scavenger hunt, which had mostly resulted in villagers finding lost buttons and a rather bewildered badger. The Royal Cook, bless her cotton socks, had attempted to bake a “comfort pie” that tasted suspiciously of desperation and a hint of cinnamon. And all the while, Squeaky the squirrel, with his impossibly knowing gaze, had simply sat on a nearby branch, flicking his tail as if to say, “Oh, you think *that’s* a problem?”
Rufus flopped onto his enormous, velvet-draped bed, the kind that usually felt like sinking into a cloud of pure bliss. Today, it felt more like a lumpy mattress filled with disappointment. He stared at the ornate canopy, picturing the glittering cascade of gold coins that should have been filling the royal treasury. Where could it have possibly gone? He’d checked the dungeons (just cobwebs and a grumpy frog), the royal stables (mostly hay and a horse with a penchant for napping), and even the royal hat collection (a truly alarming array of feathered monstrosities). Nothing.
He sighed again, a deeper, more resonant sound this time, and let his head sink into the plump pillows. The scent of lavender and… something else… tickled his nose. He shifted, trying to find a more comfortable position, and his hand brushed against the underside of the mattress. It felt… odd. Lumpy. Not the smooth, yielding softness he expected.
