The silence was the first thing Capone noticed. Not the absence of noise, for West Greenville always hummed with its own peculiar rhythm, but the absence of threat. The usual low thrum of anxiety that vibrated beneath the surface of his territory, the prickle of anticipation for the next skirmish, the gnawing worry of a new challenger rising from the ashes – all of it was gone. He carried a worn leather satchel, its contents unknown to Capone, but its presence a constant reminder of their shared journey. “It’s done, Cap,” Rick said, his voice low, devoid of the usual celebratory edge. He’d seen too much, fought too hard, to feel jubilant. “Thorne’s boys are gone. The whispers are dying down. Nobody’s stepping up.”
