Chapter 5
The thrum of the Resonant Echo was a familiar lullaby, yet now it sang a dirge. Ki’rha stood on the command bridge, the living metal of her ship cool beneath her claws. Nox’Rho shimmered through the viewport, a bruised purple and sickly green jewel hanging in the void. It no longer felt like a haven, but a wound, gaping and festering. The fleet, a motley constellation of allied vessels – the crystalline spires of the Kry’vaal, the hulking, armored leviathans of the Ghol-Rhakh, the shimmering, ghost-like forms of the Chronos-Seekers – orbited like anxious vultures. Their alliance, forged in the crucible of truth, felt fragile, a thin shield against an unimaginable horror.
Ki’rha’s thoughts drifted to the others, scattered across the galaxy, rallying their forces. The weight of every consciousness threatened by the Screa’lax, every mind consumed by the Dreamlessness, pressed down on her. The faces of her own kind, hollowed by the plague, flickered in her mind’s eye. This wasn't just a war; it was an amputation of the soul.
“Approaching primary landing zone designated by the symbionts,” the ship’s AI, a calm, synthesized voice, announced. “Fluctuations in localized reality detected. Recommend caution.”
