Kayson, still dusted with what he suspected was a fine layer of ancient popcorn kernel, surveyed the wreckage of his uncle’s carnival. It wasn't just broken; it was aggressively broken, as if the rides themselves had staged a rebellion against joy. He’d spent the morning wrestling with a decidedly uncooperative Ferris wheel, which had responded to his every attempt at lubrication with a series of groans that sounded suspiciously like a dying walrus. His latest effort had resulted in him dangling precariously from a gondola, a feat that would have been impressive if it hadn’t been entirely accidental.

He landed with a soft thud, right next to a rather forlorn-looking carousel horse whose painted eyes seemed to weep glitter. “Okay, Kayson,” he muttered to himself, brushing off his jeans. “Deep breaths. You’ve got this. It’s just… a lot of tetanus waiting to happen.”

He needed help. Real help. Not the kind that involved accidentally setting off a smoke machine while trying to fix a lightbulb, as had happened yesterday. He’d heard whispers, of course. Whispers about Ms. Abigail Periwinkle, the town librarian, a woman whose stern demeanor could curdle milk at fifty paces. Yet, there were also hushed tales of a secret passion for rollercoasters, a longing for the thrill that her meticulously organized life seemed to prohibit. And then there was Barnaby ‘The Boulder’ Brock, a man whose retirement from the circus had apparently involved a vow of perpetual grumpiness. Kayson had seen him once at the general store, a mountain of a man with hands the size of dinner plates, scowling at a display of artisanal jams.
