Chapter 4
Secrets in a Notebook
Late at night, Elena writes dreams of faraway places. She hides the notebook under her pillow, afraid of being caught wanting more.
The dormitory was quiet at last. The other girls had surrendered to sleep one by one, their breathing settling into soft rhythms, punctuated by the occasional sigh or the rustle of a blanket. Outside, a pale moon hung over Kaunas, casting silver light through the frosted windowpanes. And Elena lay awake, her heart beating with a secret that felt too large for her chest.
She waited until Marta’s breathing became deep and even, until the girl in the bed across from her had stopped her quiet muttering about the morning’s embroidery lesson. Then, with the careful silence of a thief, Elena slipped her hand beneath her pillow. Her fingers found the familiar edge of the notebook—a plain thing, covered in faded blue cloth, its pages already soft from use. She had bought it weeks ago at a small shop near the market, spending coins she had saved from her allowance. The woman behind the counter had raised an eyebrow but said nothing. Perhaps she understood. Perhaps she, too, had once needed a place to hide her dreams.
Elena pulled the notebook free and held it against her chest, listening. Nothing stirred. The coal stove in the corner ticked as it cooled. Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked once and fell silent.
