Chapter 20
The Grown-Up Girl
Months later, Elena looks at the school from a distance. She breathes in the autumn air. She is still learning, but now she knows her own heart.
The autumn air wrapped around Elena like a familiar coat as she stood on the hill overlooking the school. The red brick building seemed smaller now, its chimneys releasing thin ribbons of smoke into the pale September sky. She had walked this path so many times during her years at the housekeeping school, but today felt different. Today she was not a student rushing to class, not a girl burdened by expectations and doubts. Today she was someone who had chosen to return, and that choice made all the difference.
She shifted the weight of the satchel on her shoulder and felt the familiar thud of books against her hip. Not textbooks on preserving vegetables or manuals on proper table setting, but novels and a leather-bound journal filled with her own words. The journal Jonas had given her, its pages now worn soft from months of handling.
The leaves beneath her feet crackled as she walked slowly down the hill, her boots leaving impressions in the damp earth. The school courtyard came into view, and she could see the old linden tree where she had sat so many afternoons, reading in secret, dreaming of something beyond the lessons on starch and embroidery.
