Chapter 19
A Step Forward
Elena decides to apply for a scholarship to study literature. Her hands shake as she mails the letter. Tears fall, but not of sorrow.
The morning air was crisp and carried the promise of autumn, a season of endings and beginnings. Elena stood at the small desk in her room, the one she had inherited from a girl who had left the school last year to marry a baker. The desk was scarred with ink stains and the ghost of old letters, and now it held a blank sheet of paper, an envelope, and a pen that trembled in her hand.
She had made up her mind. The decision had not come suddenly, but rather like the slow dawn that crept over Kaunas each morning, inevitable and gentle. The scholarship application lay before her, a form from the University of Lithuania’s Faculty of Humanities. It required a personal essay, a letter of recommendation—she had already asked Signora Petrova, who had agreed with a firm nod and a rare, soft smile—and a sample of her writing. Elena had chosen a poem she had written in secret, about a bird that flew beyond the garden walls, never looking back.
