The teacher shows Elena an old photo of herself as a young artist. 'I understand,' she whispers. 'But I chose safety. You still can choose courage.'
The classroom had grown quiet, the last of the girls shuffling out with their embroidery hoops and murmured goodbyes. Elena lingered at her desk, pretending to tidy her already neat satchel. She had hoped to slip away unnoticed, but Signora Petrova’s voice stopped her.
“Elena. A moment, please.”
The words were not harsh, but they carried a weight that made Elena’s shoulders tighten. She turned slowly, meeting the teacher’s steady gray eyes. Signora Petrova stood by the window, her back to the fading light of a November afternoon. The shadows lengthened across the floorboards, pooling at her feet like spilled ink.
