The embroidery room smelled of lavender and beeswax, a scent that usually settled Elena’s thoughts into neat rows like the stitches on her fabric. But today, the fragrance clung to her like a fog she could not shake. She sat at her frame, needle poised above a half-finished rose, though her hand had not moved in several minutes.

Across the table, Marta worked with quick, purposeful strokes. Her thread pulled through the linen with a soft whisper, and her lips moved in silent counting. Every few seconds, she glanced up at Elena, then away, then back again. The silence between them had grown thick, like dough that had been kneaded too long.
