Teachers praise perfect aprons. Elena’s is flawed. She realizes her real test is choosing her own path, not a perfect stitch.

The examination hall smelled of starch and tension. Twenty aprons hung from wooden pegs along the wall, each one a testament to weeks of careful stitching. The morning light fell through the tall windows, illuminating the white fabric like rows of patient ghosts.

Elena stood with her hands clasped behind her back, watching as the teachers moved from apron to apron, their fingers tracing seams, checking hems, nodding in quiet approval. Frau Director Kleinschmidt led the inspection, her silver hair pinned so tightly it seemed to pull her face into a permanent expression of mild disappointment. Behind her walked Signora Petrova, her eyes sharp and her lips pressed thin, and old Fräulein Weiss, whose trembling hands somehow still managed to find every loose thread.

"Perfect," Frau Director murmured at Marta's apron. "Flawless construction. The hem is straight, the stitching consistent, the pocket alignment precise."
