The sewing room smelled of starch and pressed cotton, a clean, patient smell that usually steadied Elena’s hands. But today, her fingers trembled as she sorted through the scrap basket. The class was making a communal quilt—each girl responsible for a square, a self-portrait stitched in fabric. The finished quilt would hang in the school’s entrance hall, a testament to their skill and their shared purpose.

Elena traced the edge of a faded blue scrap. Blue like the sky beyond the tall windows. Blue like the dress Jonas had worn the day he showed her his sketchbook. The day he had said, “The world isn’t just what they tell you it is. It’s also what you imagine.”

She had imagined a bird.
