Only you and your blue agony, which has finally ended. In Kaunas, autumn has painted cheeks pink, and I sit on a bench near the Vytautas the Great Bridge. In my hands I hold a shoe—not Cinderella's, but the one I found yesterday in a train carriage traveling from Vilnius. It is black, scuffed, with dust inside. But I am no longer searching for treasure.

I remember how Copernicus looked at the sky and saw no blue light, only the dance of protons. And I saw your face when we last wept together. Your tears were like serotonin spilled on silk—a red cross on the heart. Now there is no pain. The neuroleptics have quieted, the gas war is over. Satellites no longer fall, only the moon shines through clouds that draw a white bruise.

You told me: "Remember what you saw before the heart of the earth." I remember. The luggage was heavy, full of bones and apples, until the tree withered in the night witch's garden. But now everything is light. The carriages no longer carry to Siberia, and Pilypas Norbutas Grudinskis left long ago. Only your eyes remain—green, with the color of karma. I remember them when I close my own.
