The sterile scent of disinfectant, usually a comforting aroma in Dr. Aisha Khan’s clinic, seemed to do little to cut through the persistent dampness that clung to the air, a mirror of the city’s perpetual haze. Sunlight, filtered through layers of dust and exhaust, cast a weary, jaundiced glow on the worn linoleum floor. Sarah sat opposite Dr. Khan, the familiar ache of worry settling deeper in her chest with each passing moment. She clutched a worn notebook, its pages filled with her neat, determined script, a testament to hours spent meticulously documenting the city’s growing malaise.

“It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen, Sarah,” Dr. Khan began, her voice soft but laced with a weariness that went beyond the long hours. Her dark eyes, usually so bright with compassion, were shadowed with a profound concern. She gestured vaguely towards the window, as if the very air outside was a tangible sickness. “The number of patients presenting with severe respiratory distress… it’s astronomical. Bronchitis, asthma exacerbations, even pneumonia in cases where there’s no clear viral or bacterial cause. And the children… oh, the children.” A sigh escaped her lips, a puff of frustration. “Their lungs are so delicate, and they’re bearing the brunt of it.”

Sarah leaned forward, her journalist’s instinct sharpening, but her empathy for her friend overriding any urge to immediately grab a pen. “You mentioned before that it wasn’t just the usual seasonal flu.”
