Chapter 4
Haunted Amusements and Possessions
The artifact hunt leads to a creepy amusement park. Jaehyun gets possessed by a minor demon, forcing Rumi to use her new skills and a catchy K-pop tune to rescue him.
The air, usually thick with the scent of cotton candy and cheap popcorn, now hung heavy with something else entirely. Something cold and cloying, like forgotten dreams and stale laughter. We’d followed the whispers, the fragmented clues that Jaehyun and I had pieced together from ancient texts disguised as fan forums and cryptic messages hidden in music video easter eggs. The artifact, the one that could finally help us push back the encroaching darkness, was rumored to be hidden within the decaying heart of “Wonderland,” a once-gleaming amusement park now surrendered to the rust and the shadows.
“Are you sure about this, Rumi?” Jaehyun’s voice, usually a beacon of calm, held a tremor that mirrored the unease settling in my stomach. I swallowed, trying to project a confidence I didn't quite feel. “The legends are pretty clear, Jaehyun. This is the place. The ‘Heart of Merriment,’ they called it. Apparently, it’s hidden somewhere near the carousel.” My words sounded hollow, even to me. Every creak of metal, every gust of wind whistling through the empty stalls, felt like a predator’s breath on my neck. This was so much scarier than any comeback stage I’d ever nervously watched.
