Chapter 7
Escape from the Island
With Zion's knowledge of the island and Lily's quick thinking, they devise a clever plan. They manage to trick Lily's father, escape the island with a portion of the treasure, and leave him to face his own greed and isolation.
Lily’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the sudden, chilling silence. The glint of gold, which moments before had promised endless wonder, now seemed to cast a sinister shadow. Her father’s eyes, usually alight with the thrill of discovery, were hard and cold, like shards of ice. The words he’d spoken, sharp and final, echoed in the cavern, a stark contrast to the joyful shouts of a treasure found. She looked at Zion, his hand instinctively reaching for hers, his gaze a silent question. Could they truly escape?
Zion, however, was not one to linger in fear. His eyes, wide with concern for Lily, darted from her father to the cavern entrance, assessing their options with a speed that belied his young age. He squeezed Lily’s hand, a comforting anchor in the swirling panic. "We need a plan," he whispered, his voice barely audible above the rush of blood in Lily’s ears.
Lily nodded, her mind racing. Her father was between them and the entrance, his shadow stretching long and menacing across the piles of gold. He was strong, driven by a greed that had turned him into a stranger. But she knew him, knew his arrogance, his belief that he was the cleverest person in any room. And Zion knew this island, its hidden paths and secret places. Together, they might stand a chance.
