It was Zion, a boy she’d only moments ago met, who had pulled her from the path of her father’s rage, his small, strong hands a surprising anchor. Now, as her father fumbled with a crude, heavy club, Lily felt a tremor of fear, not just for herself, but for the shimmering hoard that seemed to pulse with its own ancient light.

“Who… who are you?” Lily stammered, her voice barely a whisper, her eyes wide as she looked up at Zion. He was about her age, perhaps a little older, with sun-kissed skin and eyes the colour of the deep sea.
