Lily’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat against the sudden quiet that had fallen over the treasure cave. She looked from the glinting gold, piled higher than any mountain she’d ever imagined, to the chillingly blank expression on her father’s face. It was Zion, a boy she’d only moments ago met, who had pulled her from the path of her father’s rage, his small, strong hands a surprising anchor. Now, as her father fumbled with a crude, heavy club, Lily felt a tremor of fear, not just for herself, but for the shimmering hoard that seemed to pulse with its own ancient light.

“Who… who are you?” Lily stammered, her voice barely a whisper, her eyes wide as she looked up at Zion. He was about her age, perhaps a little older, with sun-kissed skin and eyes the colour of the deep sea. He had a quiet strength about him, a stillness that was a stark contrast to the frantic energy radiating from her father.

Zion’s gaze flickered from Lily to her father, a shadow of understanding crossing his face. He didn’t answer her question directly, his focus entirely on the threat. “He means to hurt you,” Zion stated, his voice low and steady, a surprising maturity in its tone. He pulled Lily closer, positioning himself between her and her father. “You shouldn’t be here, with him.”
