The air in the cavern, thick with the scent of damp earth and old dreams, had shimmered with Lily’s delight just moments before. Now, it felt heavy, suffocating. The gold, spread before them like a dazzling ocean, no longer sparkled with promise but with a cold, hard glint that seemed to mirror the sudden shift in her father’s eyes. He had been so excited, so proud, his face alight with the thrill of discovery. Lily, perched beside him on a velvet cushion of moss, had felt her own heart swell with shared triumph. She had followed him, a secret stowaway on his grand adventure, and here they were, bathed in the glow of the legendary Forgotten Gold.
But the gleam in her father’s eyes had changed. It wasn’t the gleam of a man who had found his fortune; it was the gleam of a predator who had cornered his prey. He was no longer looking at the treasure, but at her. Lily, his own daughter.
“Lily, my dear,” his voice, usually so full of boisterous enthusiasm, was now a low murmur, almost a caress, that sent a shiver down her spine. He reached out, not to stroke her hair as he usually did, but to cup her chin, his fingers surprisingly firm. “Look at all this. More than we could ever spend.”
