The annual Elmwood neighborhood picnic was, by all accounts, an event Arthur Pendelton approached with the same meticulous planning he reserved for defusing a bomb. This year, however, the picnic was to be coupled with a rather ambitious endeavor: a neighborhood talent show. Arthur, a man whose idea of a wild performance was reciting the ingredients list on a biscuit packet, had somehow found himself roped into contributing. His contribution? A precisely orchestrated demonstration of the perfect cup of tea brewing. He’d spent weeks perfecting his technique, acquiring the finest Darjeeling, a specially calibrated kettle, and a set of delicate porcelain cups that whispered of elegance.
Beatrice, of course, was the architect of this particular brand of mild torture. “Oh, Arthur, it will be *divine*!” she’d enthused, her eyes sparkling with a mischievous glint that always preceded a storm of delightful chaos. “Imagine! The appreciative gasps as you reveal the secrets of the perfect brew! It’s practically performance art!”
Arthur had tried to demur. “Beatrice, I’m not a performer. I’m a… tea enthusiast. There’s a marked difference.”
