Chapter 8 — The Order of Things
Alex's eighth day at the commune begins with Chloe making her move, asserting her place as the next in line after Maya. She corners Alex in the garden shed and they have a sexual encounter where Chloe's skeptical playfulness gives way to genuine desire. Afterward, Patricia, the commune's yoga instructor, introduces herself during afternoon yoga sessions and makes her interest known through physical demonstration. The competition between the women for Alex's attention begins to intensify, raising the social stakes within the commune.
Alex woke to sunlight. Not the gray light of early morning but the full yellow of a day already started. He'd overslept. His body had decided to take what it needed.
He lay still. The ceiling above him was the same ceiling. The quilt was the same quilt. But the room smelled different. It smelled like JJ. Like basil and skin and something underneath both of those things. He'd need to shower. He'd need to wash the quilt. He'd need to walk into breakfast and face thirteen women who might or might not know where he'd been last night.
He showered in the communal bathroom. The water was warm. The soap was handmade. Everything in this place was handmade. He appreciated that more now than he had a week ago.
