Chapter 4 - Something Sweet
Alex wakes early and decides to make dessert for the commune. He forages for wild berries in the commune's back fields and discovers a wild honey source in an old oak tree. Maya accompanies him on the foraging trip, and their connection deepens through conversation and shared work. Alex returns and prepares a wild berry cobbler with honey drizzle in the communal kitchen, assisted by Chloe. The dessert is served after dinner to the entire commune, earning Alex genuine appreciation and solidifying his place in the community. Alex woke before the sun. That hadn't happened in months. His body knew something his brain didn't yet. It got him upright, feet on the floor, hands on his knees. The cabin was gray. Pre-dawn light filtered through the curtain like smoke.
The knots in the ceiling were still watching. He was getting used to them.
He pulled on shorts. The same shorts. The only shorts. He stood in the center of the room and thought about yesterday. Kitchen work. Vegetable peeling. Ruth's roast. Maya's book with no cover. Chloe saying you just have to be.
