Chapter 40 — The Stand
Alex measures the commune's utility trailer and works with Gene at Holloway's Hardware to design a towable vegetable stand. Saturday morning, Alex drives Jodie to Linda Carr's house. Jodie reveals to her mother that she's been living at the commune. Linda is surprised but accepting. Jodie asks if she can work the vegetable stand once it's built, and Linda is supportive. Alex and Jodie then visit Gillespie Feed and Supply and ask the owner about parking the stand in the store's lot. The owner agrees. After the long day, Alex and Jodie return to the commune and spend the evening in the hot tub, reflecting on the summer. Alex decides he's staying. The story ends.
Alex woke at five. The light was thin. The cabin was cool.
He'd been thinking about the trailer for two days. The commune had a utility trailer parked behind the equipment shed. It was old. The bed was Four by Eight. The frame was rusted but solid. The tires held air. The hitch worked. He'd checked all of that on Thursday afternoon between the coops and the hardware store.
He pulled on shorts and boots and walked outside. The air smelled like cedar and dew. The goats were stirring in their pen. The chickens in the coops were quiet. They'd start laying in a few months. He'd be here for that.
