Chapter 39
Chapter 39 — Departures and Stands
Alex wakes in Eleanor's cabin on their last morning together. He walks her to her truck and says goodbye. She drives away. He returns to the commune and works on the chicken coop, finishing the hardware cloth and framing the run. He drives to Holloway's Hardware and finds Gene. They discuss building a vegetable stand for the commune and potential locations in town to sell produce. Jodie visits Alex at the hardware store. She tells him she wants to help build the stand and asks whether JJ would let her work it in town. She then asks Alex to go with her to visit her mother, Linda Carr.
He woke before her. The cabin was gray with early light. Eleanor's back was against his chest. Her breathing was slow and even. The scratches on his back stung when he shifted. His lip had scabbed where she'd bitten him.
He didn't move. He lay there. He counted her breaths. He stopped counting. It didn't help.
She stirred. She turned over. Her eyes opened. She looked at him. She didn't smile. She didn't need to.
