Chapter 29 — Dado Cuts
Alex finishes his Gillespie Community College application and continues sanding cedar for Maya's bookshelf. On Monday he drives to Holloway's Hardware, where Gene teaches him dado cuts and joinery for the shelf. Gene leaves Alex to run the store while he attends an appointment. A woman comes in wanting a shed built, and Alex takes down the specifics for Gene. They talk throughout the day and time gets away from Alex. He returns to the commune late, eats dinner, and meets Karen and Kristen at the hot tub. The three of them have an explicit sexual encounter.
He woke at five. The pine knot eye watched from the door.
The application was on the desk. Two pages. He'd filled it out the night before in pencil, then gone over it in pen. Name. Address — JJ's address. Program: Carpentry and Construction Technology. Semester: Fall. He'd read it three times before signing it. The signature looked different from the one on his driver's license. Steadier. Older.
He put the application in an envelope. He'd mail it from town. He'd drop it at the post office on the way to Gene's.
