Chapter 19 — The Large Oak
Alex wakes early to test the firebox and chimney draft, confirming the hot tub heating system works. Maya brings him breakfast and they talk about the remaining steps to finish the tub. Alex mentions Eleanor's note requesting a meeting before dinner. After dinner and cleanup, Alex and Maya walk to the Large Oak with a blanket. They have an extended sexual encounter in multiple positions, pausing between to talk. Maya asks Alex if he would have anal sex with her, and he says yes. During a quiet moment afterward, Alex tells Maya he loves her, and the weight of the declaration settles between them as the summer's end approaches.
Alex woke at five. The light was gray. The creek was loud.
He pulled on jeans and a flannel over his bare chest. The tape on his hands was holding. He laced his boots and walked outside.
The air was cool. Dew on the grass. The pad was still dark, the concrete wet. He went to the firebox and knelt beside it.
