Chapter 12 — The Road to Town
JJ wakes Alex early and asks him to drive into town for goat medication after one of the commune's goats falls ill. During the drive, JJ and Alex talk about his conversation with Eleanor from the previous night. JJ agrees with Eleanor's advice about boundaries but adds her own perspective on the commune's history with men who didn't set them. Alex reveals he's been thinking about his future and lets slip that he's considering attending a nearby college so he could stay at the commune beyond the summer. He also expresses interest in learning practical skills like carpentry to contribute more meaningfully. JJ is surprised and moved by his commitment. They pick up the medication from the town vet, stop at a hardware store where Alex buys a small carving knife, and have a brief lunch where JJ shares more about her late marriage to Alex's uncle. They return to the commune and treat the goat. Alex reflects on the growing complexity of his situation and resolves to start having honest conversations with the women, beginning with Maya. The knock came at five. Alex knew the knock. JJ knocked the way she did everything. Once. Firm. Like she'd already decided you were going to answer before she hit the wood.
He sat up. The hand throbbed. The ceiling crack was still there. It was always there. He was starting to think of it as a roommate.
