Elara traced its familiar curves with a fingertip, a subtle protest against the sleek, impersonal devices that dominated everyone else's lives. Her room, a curated chaos of faded band posters, stacks of well-loved books, and the faint scent of turpentine from a forgotten painting, was her haven. It was a world built on texture, on the tangible, on the whisper of paper and the warmth of worn fabric. The digital realm, with its flickering screens and manufactured smiles, felt like a foreign country, one she’d never quite managed to visit, let alone inhabit.

Then, the serpent stirred. The shrill, insistent ring of the landline, a sound she hadn't heard in what felt like eons, sliced through the quiet afternoon. It was an alien noise, sharp and demanding, pulling her from the peaceful embrace of her analog sanctuary. She hesitated, a prickle of unease skittering down her spine. Who would even call a landline these days? Her fingers, usually deft with a brush or the spine of a book, fumbled for the receiver, her heart thudding a nervous rhythm against her ribs.

“Hello?” Her voice, usually soft and melodic, sounded thin, reedy, even to her own ears.
