The tangled cord of the landline phone, a relic Elara cherished in its stubborn analog existence, felt heavier today. It coiled on the small table by her bed, a miniature serpent of beige plastic, a stark contrast to the sleek, silent rectangles that dominated everyone else's lives. The phone itself, a chunky, cream-colored model, seemed to hum with a low, expectant energy, its dial tone a familiar comfort that had lately taken on a more ominous resonance.

The calls had started subtly, a whisper at the edge of her hearing, a voice that seemed to slither through the wires, bypassing the usual static and crackle of a bad connection. At first, she’d dismissed them as wrong numbers, prank calls from bored teenagers, or perhaps a glitch in the ancient system. But the caller’s words… they were too precise, too intimate. They spoke of the ache in her left shoulder when she slept on it wrong, the way she chewed her lip when she was lost in thought, the almost imperceptible tremor in her hands when she sketched charcoal portraits. It was as if someone had been living inside her head, cataloging her most private moments, her most fleeting anxieties.

This morning, the call had been different. Sharper. The voice, still genderless and unnervingly calm, had carried a new edge, a predatory glint. “You think you can bury it, Elara? Like an old photograph in a dusty album? It doesn’t fade. It just waits.”
