The air in Newark, usually a symphony of traffic horns and distant sirens, grew unnervingly still. It was a stillness that pressed in, heavy and expectant, like the moment before a storm breaks. Maverick Franklin Bernard, hunched over a cold cup of coffee in his cramped office, felt it prickle his skin. The city, his city, felt…wrong. The usual hum of life seemed muted, as if the very concrete and steel beneath his feet were holding their breath. He’d been chasing ghosts for weeks, a string of increasingly bizarre incidents that defied logic, even for a seasoned investigator like himself. Petty vandalism that left no trace, strange energy fluctuations that fried electronics, and the unsettling feeling of being watched, a phantom presence that clung to the edges of his vision. He’d chalked it up to stress, to overwork, to the nagging unease that had settled in his gut like a stone. But this stillness, this pervasive quiet, was different. It was a silence that screamed.

Across town, in the sprawling, untamed green of the Ramapo Mountains, Merrick felt the shift too, but with a visceral, primal intensity. The wind, usually a boisterous companion rustling through the ancient oaks, was a mere sigh, a hesitant breath against his weathered face. The very earth beneath his worn boots seemed to vibrate with a low, discordant hum, a tremor that resonated not in his bones, but in some deeper, older part of him. He’d always been attuned to the subtle shifts in the natural world, a sensitivity honed by years of solitary guardianship. But this was no natural phenomenon. This felt like a wound, a tear in the fabric of reality itself, bleeding something alien and wrong into his world. He scanned the dense canopy, his eyes, usually sharp and discerning, now wide with a dawning apprehension. The whispers, the ones he’d been hearing for days, grew louder, coalescing into a single, chilling word: *breach*.

Back in the city, Maverick decided he’d had enough of the oppressive quiet. He needed to see, to feel the pulse of the streets, even if it was a weak one. He grabbed his worn leather jacket, the familiar weight a small comfort, and headed out. The usual evening rush hour was strangely subdued. Fewer cars, fewer pedestrians, and those who were out seemed to move with a hesitant, almost furtive air. A flicker of movement caught his eye – a shadow detaching itself from the brickwork of an alleyway. It was too quick, too fluid to be human. He instinctively reached for the reassuring weight of his service weapon, but by the time he’d drawn it, the shadow was gone, swallowed by the deepening twilight. A shiver traced its way down his spine. This was beyond odd. This was…unsettling.
