The flickering neon of a late-night diner cast long, dancing shadows across Maverick Franklin Bernard’s face. He nursed a lukewarm coffee, the bitterness a familiar companion to the gnawing unease that had settled in his gut for weeks. The city, usually a vibrant symphony of sounds and lights, had begun to hum with a discordant note, a low thrum beneath the surface that only he seemed to hear. Reports of peculiar disappearances, unsettling phenomena, and a general air of disquiet had become a daily occurrence, each one a loose thread in a tapestry he couldn't quite unravel. His desk at the precinct was piled high with these anomalies, each file a testament to a growing mystery that defied logical explanation.

He’d been chasing phantoms, he’d told himself. Stress. Too many late nights. But the unease persisted, a cold finger tracing the back of his neck. He’d even started experiencing vivid dreams, fragmented visions of swirling darkness and a chilling whisper that echoed his name. He’d dismissed them, of course. Every sharp, intuitive detective knew that the mind could play tricks under duress. Yet, the dreams felt too real, too insistent.

A clatter of ceramic against Formica jolted him from his thoughts. The waitress, a woman whose weary smile had seen more than her fair share of dawn shifts, refilled his cup. “Rough night, detective?” she asked, her voice a low murmur.
