The air in Maverick’s cramped office still hummed with the residual tension of their recent victory, a low thrum beneath the usual city sounds that leaked through the window. He traced the rim of his lukewarm coffee mug, the ceramic cool against his fingertips. Outside, the Jersey sun, usually so garish and insistent, seemed to cast a softer, more forgiving light. It was a welcome change. The city, or at least the part of it he knew, felt a little safer tonight. A little less like a battlefield.
Anya sat opposite him, her posture radiating a quiet exhaustion. Her usual meticulous notes lay scattered across his desk, a testament to the whirlwind of events that had brought them all together. Beside her, Merrick leaned back in a chair, his usual gruff demeanor softened by a weary contentment. He’d shed the rougher edges of his usual solitude, a subtle shift that hadn't gone unnoticed by Maverick. The forgotten blade, now safely secured in a reinforced vault Anya had helped devise, rested like a sleeping dragon, its potential for both salvation and destruction held in check, for now.
“It’s quiet,” Maverick said, the statement hanging in the air like a held breath. “Too quiet, maybe.”
