The air, thick with the acrid tang of ozone and the metallic scent of spilled otherworldly ichor, clung to Jersey like a shroud. For a few moments, an almost deafening silence descended, a stark contrast to the cacophony of battle that had just ripped through the familiar streets. The invaders, or what remained of them, shimmered and dissolved, their forms unraveling like smoke in a sudden gust of wind, leaving behind only the faint, unsettling hum of their departure. Jersey was safe.

Maverick Franklin Bernard, his trench coat stained and his usually sharp features etched with a weariness that went soul-deep, leaned against a toppled lamppost. His knuckles were white where he gripped the hilt of the Forgotten Blade, its ethereal glow finally dimming, its ancient power receding like a tide. He watched as the last vestiges of the otherworldly threat vanished, a profound sense of disbelief mingling with relief. They had done it. He, Anya, and Merrick. Together.

Anya Sharma, her usually neat historian’s attire disheveled and smudged with grime, sank to her knees beside him, her breath coming in ragged gasps. Her eyes, however, still held a spark of fierce intelligence, now tinged with wonder. “It’s… over?” she whispered, her voice raspy. She looked at the blade in Maverick’s hand, its surface now merely polished metal, devoid of the raw energy that had pulsed through it moments before.
