The chill in the air was more than just the encroaching autumn. It was a seep, a creeping dampness that settled not just on skin, but in the very bones of the land. Merrick felt it most keenly when he was out in the deeper woods, the ancient trees standing sentinel, their leaves whispering secrets he couldn't quite decipher. He’d always been attuned to the pulse of the world around him, a rhythm most humans had long forgotten, but lately, that pulse had become erratic, a frantic thrumming that spoke of disruption.
He was by the old quarry, the water a bruised purple in the fading light, when the whispers began again. Not the rustling of leaves, but something more… deliberate. They coiled around him, insidious tendrils of sound that seemed to emanate from the very stones beneath his feet. He’d heard them before, fleeting and indistinct, but tonight they carried a weight, a resonance that vibrated deep within his chest.
